Moving to Omaha

The online poker world is a living, breathing and continuously evolving entity. Overall player skill levels change all the time, and as a result of that, certain poker variants are swapped with others in the top of the public’s preferences. A few years back (before online poker) Stud was the game of choice for most Americans. Then came Holdem. The new NL structure, the easy to learn rules and the accessibility offered by the internet came together to create an explosive mix. For a while there, Holdem was pretty much the only game online players would play. As the popularity of the game spread, and as a whole online industry was built up around it, problems began to rear their heads.

The internet didn’t just act as an environment where players could take on their opponents, it also fulfilled the rolled it had been conceived to fulfill: delivering information. Poker strategy information became freely available everywhere, and that resulted in an explosion of the average player’s skill level. What that meant was that games grew gradually less and less profitable, and enjoyable. People usually want to improve their skills and as a result of that their earning potential in poker. After a while, special extra value perks like rakeback and poker propping deals became necessary for players to maintain their winning rates. Given the fact that the vast majority of players out there still have no idea what rake rebate is, it’s safe to say the value has pretty much been driven out of low and medium stakes Holdem games over the last couple of years. That is not to say one can’t still make money at Holdem, but he will have to exercise more careful table selection and he will have to take full advantage of deals like rakeback and various other bonuses and promotions.

The bottom line is that the elite of the poker world has already made the move to PL Omaha. It wasn’t just a question of being hip and keeping up with the other big boys. It was a question of being able to secure a meaningful edge over one’s opponents. It was pretty much a survival move – the way evolution should work.

Now most players attempting to follow in the footsteps of the greats will be met with a lot of adversity at the PLO tables. Some of it will stem from the PLO betting structure, but most from the difference between relative hand values in Omaha and Holdem.

In Omaha, interestingly enough, the differences between starting hands (odds-wise) are a lot smaller than in Holdem. You never enjoy an overwhelmingly huge edge over your opponent regardless of whether or not you’re holding the best possible starting hand. This small difference carries over to the post flop stage of the action as well. If you hit a hand you’d shove all in on without a second thought in Holdem, it may not be such a good idea to do the same in Omaha.

The 4 cards in the pockets of your opponents mean that they may be having multiple draws or re-draws themselves, not to mention the increased possibility of a set. While something like top two pair may be a monster in Holdem on the flop, in Omaha, where straights and flushes rule supreme, it’s nothing but a good start. It just gives you a nudge in the right direction, helping you make up your mind on whether or not you want to play your hand and on how big a pot you’re willing to build for it. Only evaluate your hand on the turn. The turn card rules out the possibility of backdoor draws, so the factors to consider against your hand are fewer.
